Local tourism operators have reason to be pleased: the most recent data confirms that Lake Como is one of the most popular destinations for tourists!

Over the last ten years, the number of visitors has grown by 39%, and what’s even more striking is that 76% of these tourists are international, placing Lake Como ahead of Lake Garda, which reaches only 71%. Clearly, tourism in Como shows no signs of slowing down. Between 2017 and 2018 alone, tourist stays increased by 4.7%, reaching an impressive 3.23 million overnight stays.

It’s also interesting to look at where tourists choose to stay: two-thirds prefer hotels, with 500,000 more hotel stays than a decade ago. However, there’s also a significant boom in non-hotel accommodations, which have jumped from 630,000 to over 1 million stays. According to the Chamber of Commerce Research Office, one-third of tourists now choose alternative lodging options.

With the constant rise in visitor numbers and the booming short-term rental market, buying a property to rent out is now a highly attractive investment opportunity.

However, there are two areas local authorities want to improve: the average length of stay, which is slightly declining (now at 2.5 days), and language skills, as 3 out of 4 tourists speak a language other than Italian. The Research Office suggests taking action on both fronts: encouraging longer stays and improving language proficiency among tourism professionals.

The numbers are clear: purchasing property on Lake Como is a smart, strategic decision that can deliver excellent returns and new opportunities.
